At the end of WW II, the Me 262 became the first jet powered aircraft in history to see combat service. But it was too late to make a difference and have an impact on the outcome of the war. It had 2 engines mounted under the wings and was first developed as a bomber rather than a fighter. However, the fighter version proved to be better than any propeller driven aircraft.
